re: Sturm Auditorium\, Denver Botanic Gardens\n\nWhen:  MONDAY April 10th
:  7:00PM -9:00PM\n\nIn this talk\, we will take a tour of the ecology of
Colorado. We will explore the various habitats of Colorado\, the current
health of these habitats\, and the fungi that inhabit these ecosystems. We
will discuss current research on Colorado fungi and what you can do to co
ntribute to our understanding of the fungal diversity in Colorado.\n\nAmy
Honan began her foray into fungi at the Telluride Mushroom Festival in the
early 1990’s. She earned her Master’s degree studying the fungi of SE
Asia under Dr. Dennis Desjardin at San Francisco State University. Her ma
ster’s thesis explored the fungal genus Tetrapyrgos. Her doctoral disse

Tulostoma. She currently teaches mycology for Oregon State University and
is based in Crested Butte\, CO.\n\nJoin Zoom Meeting\nhttps://us02web.zoom

SUMMARY:UV Night Foray
DESCRIPTION:UV Night Foray – 7:30 PM Meetup at the Stegosaurus Lot near G
olden\nCMS member Rami will be facilitating an ultraviolet light fluoresce
nce mushroom walk this Friday evening\, 9/1/23. Catch a glimpse of the glo
wing forest as the season wraps up!\n\nUV flashlights (365nm) will be prov
ided to attempt to find all sorts of beautiful\, glowing colors in nature.
Several mushrooms fluoresce in a spectrum of vivid colors under UV light
as well as some chrome lichens\, glowing pine sap\, and glowing scarlet re
ds in plants/algae! We will explore what we can find as a group.\n\nThis e
vent is limited to 20 adult participants (no children) to keep this iterat
ion and format simple. We will drive to a location west of Denver for 1 ho
ur\, walk for 1.5 hours\, then meet at our starting point to show anything
fun that we collected that others may have missed for about 30 minutes. I
t is expected to wrap up at around 10:30 -11:00 pm.\n\nThis is an open for
mat walk where we are meeting outside\, in the dark\, to explore a fairly
confined trail. You should assume that any expected risks/complications of
navigating around in the dark in the forest will be present and you must
remain with others during the hike (no solo journeys at night\, please!).\
n\nProvided:\n- 365 nm UV flashlights\n- UV blocking glasses\n- Red light
flashlights (to not disrupt night vision)\n- Fun in the forest\n\nBring:\n
 - Phone with offline map area downloaded in CoTrex (colorado trail explore
 r) or Google maps\n- Water\, snacks\, warm clothing\, and anything else th
at may be required in a contingency situation\n- Red lights for night visi
on preservation\, if you have extras\n- White flashlights\n- Any extra 365
nm spectrum uv flashlights if you would like\n- USB power bank\, if you ha
ve one\n\n\n\nRegistration for the UV Night Foray opens at 12:00pm on Tues
day\, August 29th. \nONLY sign up if you intend to participate. There is

  the family Bankeraceae
DESCRIPTION:Talk Description: In North America\, the fungal family Bankera
ceae includes the genera Sarcodon\, Hydnellum\, Phellodon\, and Boletopsis
 . This family contains well-known (and not-so-well-known) edible species\,
as well as highly prized dye-mushrooms. Bankeraceae is also known for its
many rare species which are experiencing reported population declines acr
oss the globe. This talk covers recent and on-going research to describe t

SUMMARY:”Discovering Psilocybe azurescens” with Paxton Hoag
DESCRIPTION:In the mid 1970s Paxton Hoag was living next to 115 acres of bo
ttom land cow pasture in Astoria\, Oregon and took up picking Psilocybe s
emilanceata. In 1975 his family went to the First International Conference
on Psilocybin Mushrooms where he met many of the early principals of Psil
ocybin research. In the fall of 1977 Paxton ran across an unknown Psilocyb
e mushroom on the shores of Astoria Oregon. The story of getting a name fo
r a mushroom is quite interesting\, especially if that mushroom is Psiloc
ybe azurescens. This is that story\; plus of course a few side stories.\nA
bout the Speaker\nPaxon Hoag grew up outside of Astoria Oregon in a small
community named Fernhill. His father was in the US Navy\, and was transfer
red to Astoria in 1954 and retired in 1958. Encouraged by his parents\, Pa
xton was fascinated by mushrooms at an early age. He loved exploring all o
f the mushrooms that grew in his neighborhood\; and read everything he cou
ld find in the library about fungi. He attended Oregon State University\,
but is mostly self taught. He dabbled in agar culture and lab work and fin
ally ended up with outdoor cultivation of Psilocybe azurescens.\nMeeting
Entry Reminder: All entry and exit for after hours plant society meetings

SUMMARY:Brian Perry: Illuminating Fungi - the Science of Fungal Bioluminesc
 ence
DESCRIPTION:Fungal bioluminescence was first described by Aristotle (384-32
2 B.C.E.)\, and continues to fascinate and puzzle scientists today. While
over 125 species of fungi are known to produce luminescent mushrooms or my
celium\, the chemical and genetic basis of the light-producing reaction wa
s only recently discovered\, and the reason these fungi glow remains somew
hat of a mystery. Come learn about our current understanding of the evolut
ion\, ecology and biochemistry of this phenomenon. And yes\, there will be
lots of pictures of glowing mushrooms!\n\nBrian Perry is a Professor of
Biology at California State University East Bay\, and Director of the HAY
Fungarium. He received his Master's Degree from San Francisco State Univer
sity under the guidance of Dr. Dennis E. Desjardin\, and his Ph.D. from Ha
rvard University where he studied with Dr. Donald H. Pfister. Brian has be
en studying fungi since 1995\, and has published over 45 papers in scienti
fic journals. In addition to studying the evolution of fungal bioluminesce
nce\, he also conducts research on mushrooms and other fungi of Vanuatu\,
the assembly and biogeography of island fungal communities\, endophytic fu
ngi\, and the systematics of Mycena and allied genera. Brian teaches sev
