As a Ph.D. candidate in U.S. History at The Graduate Center of the City University of New York, their research delves into the pivotal role women played in mushroom foraging and mycological studies during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Their insightful analyses shed light on how these pioneering women navigated societal norms to contribute significantly to the field of mycology. Madeline has been recognized with fellowships from esteemed institutions such as the Schlesinger Library at Harvard, the Lloyd Library and Museum, the New York Botanical Garden, and the New-York Historical Society’s Center for Women’s History. Beyond academic pursuits, they actively engage with the mycological community as a member of the Boston Mycological Club and share their passion for fungi through work at The Mushroom Shop, where they assist others in exploring the culinary delights of various mushroom species. With a unique blend of historical scholarship and hands-on mycological experience, Madeline offers a rich perspective on the cultural and scientific significance of mushrooms. Their work enriches our understanding of mycology’s history and its enduring impact on society.
