March 2010 Newsletter

Next Meeting March 8th, 2010 President’s Column March 2010 Topic for the March meeting The first meeting of 2010 kicks off the year with double feature; we’ll start with a talk by long- time member Linnea Gillman, she will speak to us about the NAMA Foray held in 1983 at the same location we will be hosting NAMA this year Snow Mountain Ranch. By Ed Lubow We have a big year ahead of us. Most obviously, this year CMS will be hosting the 50th annual NAMA Foray at Snow Mountain Ranch. We have put together an impressive faculty for that foray, which will be discussed in much more detail in later articles. You will want to attend, if at all pos- sible. Related to the NAMA Foray, we are to the point where the leaders we have put in place to organize the foray will be needing volunteers. There will be a lot of work to do before August to make this foray a success, and we will need a lot of you to help us. Linnea Gillman is a past President of CMS and holds a Masters Degree in Mycology from Vir- ginia Tech, where she studied under world-famous mycologist, Dr. Orson Miller. Linnea developed the amazing mushroom display tables, with the pictures and handy identification tips, that we use each year at our mushroom fair. She is known I have worked with Vera Evenson to come up with a list of programs for our meetings that I hope will be of interest to everybody. While there is no way to make any particular program something that everybody will like, hopefully we have at least one or two programs during the year that even as an outstanding teacher with a vast knowledge of mushrooms and where they grow in Colorado. We’re lucky to have her address our group. Lin- nea is also the CMS Webmaster this year. the pickiest member will enjoy. I am also adding something to each meeting that I hope will make the meetings better. In addition to each month’s main program we will have a short program. The idea is to have a 10 or 15 minute presentation on a mycology topic. We’ll see how it goes. The first one will be by Linnea Gillman. Next we will have a talk by CMS member Pete Marczyk of Marczyk Fine Foods fame; a locally owned full service grocery. The Marczyk family travels the globe (literally and figuratively) to find the finest everyday items for their loyal neighbor- hood shoppers and hard to find specialty goods for Denver foodies. Marczyk Fine Foods earned a Rocky Mountain News “Top of the Rocky” Best Specialty Food Shop…”We love Marczyk’s for its fine meats, international cheeses…but the biggest reason is its people.” He will speak on “Culinary fun with wild mush- rooms. An open discussion of favorite uses for fungi in cuisine.” (continued on page 2) Spores Afield Page 1 March 12th April 9th May 14th June 11th Aug. 12-15th […]
